Before the question can be asked, it has to be understood. What made Bradman's technique work — and what kind of cricket world built it?

The Number That Started the Argument

There has never been a number in cricket quite like 99.94, the Test batting average of Sir Don Bradman.

It appears on scorecards, in record books and in endless arguments about sporting greatness. It has become less a statistic than a symbol, a figure so far removed from normal expectations that it feels almost detached from the game itself.

Sir Donald Bradman's Test batting average remains one of the most extraordinary achievements in sporting history. Cricket is a game built around failure. The finest batsmen spend their careers being dismissed, often after producing moments of brilliance. Bradman somehow turned that basic reality upside down. For two decades, dismissal was not an inevitable part of batting. It was an occasional interruption.

Yet the fascination with Bradman has never been limited to the number.

The number creates a question.

Every generation eventually arrives at the same impossible comparison. How would Bradman have handled the great bowlers who came after him? Would the methods that produced such astonishing dominance have survived against attacks built around modern athleticism, relentless pace and tactical sophistication?

The most intriguing version of that question involves the West Indies of the late 1970s and 1980s.

Under Clive Lloyd, the West Indies created something cricket had never previously seen. Their fast bowling was not built around one outstanding individual carrying an attack. It was a collective weapon designed to remove any sense of relief for the batsman.

Michael Holding could produce frightening pace with an effortless action. Joel Garner created problems through height and accuracy that no batsman could fully replicate in practice. Andy Roberts combined speed with tactical intelligence. Malcolm Marshall possessed almost every quality a fast bowler could want.

Together, they changed the expectations of Test cricket.

A batsman no longer had to survive one great bowler.

He had to survive an entire system.

That is what makes the Bradman comparison so compelling. It is not a question of whether one era was superior to another. Cricket changes too much for that argument to ever be settled honestly. Players face the challenges placed in front of them, and greatness is often defined by how well they understand the game they inherit.

The more interesting question is this: what happens when the greatest batsman cricket has produced meets the most intimidating bowling attack cricket has produced?

Bradman's genius was built on adaptation. His technique was unusual, sometimes criticised, and completely personal. He did not emerge as the perfect example of traditional coaching. He created a method that suited his own extraordinary abilities.

He watched the ball better than anyone else.

He judged length faster than anyone else.

He found scoring opportunities where others saw risk.

The West Indies represented a challenge built around qualities Bradman rarely encountered together. Extreme pace. Sustained hostility. Relentless short-pitched bowling. Four fast bowlers operating without pause.

The scorecards will never tell us the answer. There is no innings to study, no dismissal to analyse, no average to calculate.

But perhaps that is why the question has endured. The greatest sporting debates are often not about what happened. They are about the moments history never gave us.

And for all the certainty surrounding 99.94, this remains one of cricket's greatest unknowns.

The Genius of Adaptation

To understand whether Bradman could have survived the West Indies pace machine, it is necessary to understand what made him almost impossible to stop in the first place.

The temptation is to begin with the average. 99.94. But the average was the result of Bradman's greatness, not the source of it.

The real story was the way he solved problems.

Bradman was not a conventional batsman. His technique did not come from a coaching manual. He did not possess the textbook straight backlift that generations of players would be taught. His movements were individual, sometimes unconventional, and developed through years of instinctive experimentation rather than formal instruction.

That independence mattered.

Bradman was never trying to look like the ideal batsman. He was trying to become the most effective one.

His cricketing education began in Bowral, New South Wales, where he developed his remarkable hand-eye coordination through solitary practice. The famous image of the young Bradman striking a golf ball against a curved water tank with a cricket stump has become part of cricket folklore, but the importance of the exercise goes beyond the story itself.

It trained his reactions.

The rebound was unpredictable. The surface was unforgiving. He was forced to respond rather than anticipate. Over thousands of repetitions, Bradman developed an ability that would define his career: the capacity to make decisions later than most batsmen.

That quality allowed his unusual technique to flourish. His rotary backlift gave him power and flexibility. His hands remained close to his body, allowing him to adjust late and change the direction of his stroke. His footwork was not based on a rigid sequence of movements. He moved according to the delivery.

The ball dictated the response.

This sounds obvious, but it is one of the great differences between good batsmen and exceptional ones. Bowlers try to force uncertainty. They want batsmen making decisions before they know exactly what is coming. Bradman was unusually difficult to rush because his judgement was so advanced.

He did not simply see the ball. He understood it.

That understanding extended beyond technique. Bradman was a student of cricket. He analysed bowlers, fields and conditions. He knew when to attack and when patience was required. He understood that scoring runs was not about taking risks. It was about controlling them.

Many great batsmen have dominated bowling attacks. Bradman appeared to understand how those attacks worked.

That was why attempts to contain him often produced only temporary success. Bowlers could surprise him. Captains could challenge him. Conditions could test him. But once Bradman understood the problem, he usually found a response.

The Bodyline series of 1932–33 remains the clearest example. England did not attempt to out-bat Bradman. They attempted to change the conditions under which he operated. Douglas Jardine's strategy, executed by Harold Larwood and Bill Voce, attacked Bradman with fast, short-pitched bowling aimed at the body, supported by a heavily stacked leg-side field.

It was a direct challenge to his freedom.

Bradman still averaged 56.57 during the series, a remarkable return by ordinary standards. Yet the importance of Bodyline was that it revealed something rare.

For once, Bradman was forced away from his natural game. He had to reconsider his options. He had to find another method. The player who usually dictated the terms of a contest was forced to react to them.

That did not make Bodyline a defeat. It made it one of the most revealing chapters of his career.

Because the defining quality of Bradman was never that he had one perfect answer. It was that he kept finding answers.

That is why the West Indies question remains so fascinating. The issue is not whether Bradman's existing technique would have been enough against Holding, Garner, Roberts and Marshall. The game does not work that way. Great players adapt because they have to.

The question is whether Bradman's remarkable ability to solve problems would have produced another version of himself.

Before considering that, however, we need to understand the cricket world that created 99.94.


The World That Created 99.94

There is a danger when comparing cricketers across generations.

The game changes. Equipment changes. Training changes. Tactics change. The physical demands change.

It is tempting to assume that the modern player automatically faces the greater challenge.

But cricket history is rarely that simple.

Bradman played Test cricket between 1928 and 1948, a period that included some of the sport's greatest transformations. It was an era of uncovered pitches, different equipment and different tactical approaches. Yet it was not an era without quality.

The bowlers Bradman faced were not lesser opponents waiting to be surpassed by later generations. They were masters of their craft.

Bill O'Reilly was one of cricket's greatest thinkers, combining leg-spin with relentless accuracy. Clarrie Grimmett was a pioneer of wrist spin whose control and variation troubled the best batsmen in the world. Hedley Verity was a master of left-arm spin who exploited difficult conditions. Harold Larwood possessed the pace and aggression to become the centre of the most controversial tactical battle of Bradman's career.

The challenge was different. That does not mean it was easier.

When conditions were favourable, many pitches of Bradman's era could become excellent batting surfaces. Groundsmen produced hard wickets where run-making was possible, and high scores were common. The idea that Bradman spent his career battling on impossible surfaces is as inaccurate as claiming he faced weak bowling.

The reality was more complicated. The greatest challenge came when conditions changed.

Rain followed by sunshine could transform an uncovered pitch into one of cricket's most unpredictable environments. The infamous sticky wicket could create sharp deviation, uneven bounce and uncertainty that challenged even the finest batsmen.

Bradman was not immune. His record on these surfaces was significantly below his extraordinary standards.

That matters because it reveals something important about greatness. Every player, no matter how dominant, has conditions that test them more than others. The existence of a weakness does not reduce a player's achievements. It helps explain them.

Bradman's method depended on extraordinary judgement and timing, but it also depended on reading the relationship between bat, ball and surface. When that relationship became unpredictable, the certainty that defined his batting was reduced.

The West Indies represented a different kind of challenge. They brought together several of the difficulties that had troubled Bradman at different moments in his career. The movement of difficult pitches. The physical threat of Bodyline. The need to make decisions against world-class pace.

Except they delivered those problems in a way cricket had never previously seen.

They did not arrive as one great bowler.

They arrived as four.
